British Science Week 2023

What is British Science Week?

British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths — this year it runs from 10^th-19^th March. It’s organised by the British Science Association and people of all ages are encouraged to take part in and organise science events all across the country.

This year’s theme is ‘Connections’. There are connections everywhere in science — for example, between plants, animals and their environment, and between people and the everyday objects and materials we use.

If you’re keen to take part in British Science Week this year, these activity packs from the British Science Association are a good place to start. You’ll also find loads of amazing science resources on CGP+. We’ve put together a list of resources below that work well with the theme of ‘Connections’ to get you started.

 

Electricity — Traffic Lights Activity (Year 6)

Children can have a go at literally making connections with this activity to create their own set of traffic lights. There are instructions for making the circuits and questions to encourage them to think about how it works.

 

Adaptation and Evolution Video (Year 6)

Explore how the adaptations that plants and animals have evolved are connected to their environment with this video.

 

Gravity Investigation (Year 5)

With this experiment, children will make the connection between weight and gravity. They will take measurements of everyday objects using weighing scales and a newton meter to see how they compare.

 

Food Chains Lesson Pack (Year 4)

This lesson pack contains ten different resources that are great for exploring the connections between the plants and animals within a habitat. There are teaching PowerPoints, worksheets, activities and flashcards.

 

Different Parts of Flowering Plants PowerPoint (Year 3)

You can use this PowerPoint to teach children how the different parts of a plant connect and work together to help a plant grow and reproduce.

 

Materials Lesson Pack (Year 2)

Make the connection between where materials come from, what properties they have and how they can be used with this lesson pack. There are also two videos to go with it, on how the raincoat was invented and choosing the right materials to make everyday objects.

 

Life Cycle Cards (Year 2)

Introduce life cycles with these flashcards — can children make the connections between the different life stages of animals and humans?

 

Comparing and Grouping Animals Worksheet (Year 1)

Get children to identify the connections between different animals with this worksheet. They’ll have to use the similarities and differences between the animals to put them in groups. There’s a stretch version of this worksheet too.

 

Caring for the Environment Race Game (Reception)

In this board game, children will make connections between the actions we take and the ways they might help or harm the environment.

 

Environment Sort Activities (Reception)

In these activities, children are tasked with sorting plants and animals into the environments they live in, exploring how the characteristics of the plants and animals are connected to their environment. There’s one for the woodland and the seaside, and another for the rainforest and the Arctic.
