5 Heart-warming Resources for Mother’s Day

It’s almost that time of year where we celebrate all the mothers (and others) in our lives who nurture and care for us.

We’ve picked out our favourite Mother’s Day activities to help you and your class join in the fun and say thank you.

1.  Who’s My Mummy? — Matching Animals with Their Young (Reception)

These flashcards of young animals and their mothers can be used to get children talking. You can match up the animal cards together and use the sentence starter prompts to encourage children to use well-formed sentences.

2.  Meerkat Mother Calculations (Year 1)

Can your class match up the meerkat mothers with the correct number of “meer-kittens” using their addition and subtraction skills? There’s a standard version for testing ‘one more, one less’ calculations and a stretch version for working on calculations within and across 10.

3.  I Love My Mum Poem (Year 2)

What could be lovelier than giving a poem on Mother’s Day? This activity gets children to think about what they like and what they really love. There’s then an example poem to discuss and a writing frame to help them come up with their own version.

4. Daffodil Experiment (Years 3-6)

With this science activity, you can create multi-coloured daffodils by adding food colouring to the water you give them. They make great Mother’s Day gifts.

Using their knowledge of how plants work, can your class predict what will happen once they’ve added the food colouring?

5.  Mother’s Day Cross Stitch Card (Years 5-6)

In this activity, children are challenged to design their own cross stitch pattern on the template provided before hand-stitching their own unique gift. There are simple instructions included for beginners.
